Manchester for the alternative

Following the success of the March for the Alternative in London in March, Manchester is to host its own similar event against the cuts blighting our country.

The ‘Manchester for the Alternative’ protest, which will assemble at 12pm on Sunday, October 2, in Liverpool Road, off Deansgate, will march past the Conservative Party conference in Manchester Central.

It will oppose the Government’s cuts in public services and back demands for a Robin Hood tax, a crackdown on tax loopholes and evasion and support policies for growth and jobs.

North West TUC regional secretary Alan Manning said: “We hope that ‘Manchester for the Alternative’ will be successful in highlighting the impact of the cuts on communities here in the north west who are now paying the price for the bankers’ recession.

“Manchester itself has been hit harder than the leafy shire counties, despite having higher levels of social deprivation, inequality and unemployment.

“We hope local people will join the march and rally in their thousands to voice their opposition to the cuts and demand that David Cameron changes course.

“We need jobs, growth and justice for a sustainable future and this demonstration will send that message loud and clear.”

Seven union general secretaries have so far been confirmed to speak at the rally. They are: Paul Kenny, of the GMB; Len McCluskey, of UNITE; Christine Blower, of the NUT; Mark Sewotka, of PCS; Chris Keates, of the NASUWT; Bob Crow, of RMT; Mary Bousted, of ATL, as well as Manchester’s Rena Wood, from UNISON.

Copies of the flyer for the demonstration are available by emailing NWMarch@tuc.org
