CYCM 30/03/19: Fine Young Decibels

Submitted by on March 28, 2019 – 6:14 pmNo Comment

It seems every man, woman and their dog has an opinion when it comes to youth. Oscar Wilde, for example, displayed his through his commentary on aestheticism in The Picture of Dorian Gray, which saw the novel’s protagonist sell his soul to retain his youth while his portrait aged in his place. Fast forward a hundred and nineteen years (give or take) from Oscar’s day, and you’ll find the internet’s just as obsessed as he was, with more websites than there are toffees in a pensioner’s pack of Werther’s Originals dedicated to youth-related quotes. Ranging from lamentations of lost juvenescence, to bitter oldies masking their jealousy of the young with sneering ‘folly of youth’-type citations, there’s no escaping the fact that youth fascinates us all.

Anyone who bangs on about the merits of wisdom over youth, however, clearly hasn’t seen this Saturday’s musical turn, as we welcome back to CYCM fresh-faced whippersnappers, Callow Youth. Like a loud, musical equivalent of a young Ronaldo, they’ll be bringing their explosion of raw pace, power and style to our (not-so) little Moston stage, but, thankfully, without the daft muscle-flexing the Portuguese preener’s famous for.

Of course, we’ll also have the usual rammoed line-up for you, so read on to see what else lies in store for your ears, eyes and bellies this Saturday:

Couscous You Can Malcolm

We’ve been after using that strapline for a while now, so when Vegan Ronay let slip on Tuesday night that he’s preparing a Moroccan dish for your delectation this week, we mithered him no end.  So, couscous on the side it is. You can always do what several of the Oddies do, and enjoy VR’s vegan goodness and tuck into a bowl of Westwells’ goodness. Just think, you’ll be boosting the matchday takings and your waistline…

The Yorkshire Rainbow Firm used their local knowledge to scoop up the prize last time out. Keep an eye on the group of nuns eating their tagine quietly in the corner on Saturday, they’ve got a head start…

Conceived in a Cotton Town

‘Every club seems to be on sale to the highest bidder and there is no effective safeguarding mechanism in place. Fans and communities look on, powerless…’ Sound familiar? The story could be set in Blackpool, Coventry, Wimbledon, Charlton … or M16 0RA. This one’s set in Blackburn, where the Rovers Trust plan to take their protest against the club’s owners, Venky’s, to the stage in ‘Heart, Scarf and Soul’. Here to tell us about their collaboration with playwright, Julian Perkins, and the wider work of the 800-plus strong Rovers Trust is Leonard Venkhater. Described as ‘a modern mix of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen’ (we suspect his mam wrote that), Leonard will be playing self-penned protest songs as he confirms what we’ve always known: you can’t bring politics into football, it was always there in the first place.

Purples Reign

Callow Youth went down a storm when they played their second ever gig at one of our Friday night Malcolmses last summer. More recently, they played at ‘city square’, Abu Dhabi’s hi-tech poor relation, prompting their manager to tweet a correction to those blues excitedly claiming Callow Youth as the second coming of Oasis. Two of the band are indeed blues, but the other two are reds, which means we’ll not be letting them finish their set on Saturday without a Prince cover. If only we’d lined them up for the York game. ‘Purple Rain’ would have covered all the bases… If you missed them at CYCM last time round, make sure you don’t make the same mistake twice. In the meantime have a listen to the marvellous ‘Into The Sun’ in their ‘no expense spent’ video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvzo8_Z5_gU

Just so you know: if you come looking for us in the St. Mary’s Road End, then, well, you’re in the right place, because that’s our permanent gaff. Just head to the turnstiles and make your way about two-thirds down the SMRE. You can’t really miss us as we have a big, dock off stage for a start, plus a flag with a massive caravan drawn on it. And as always: entrance to CYCM is completely freemans, with the usual rules applying: no divviness, nuclear weapons or anyone who doesn’t support the construction workers on Regent Road who went on strike. Refugees welcome.
