Good post on Shelley today on the Working Class Movement Library blog, www.wcml.org.uk/blog, ‘We pity the plumage but forget the dying bird’ – a phrase borrowed from Thomas Paine in which he contrasted the focus on the topical news of the royal family with the lack of concern for the plight of the working class.

Shelley noted how wars which had been carried out in the ruling class interest resulted in large debts – and as Paul Foot wrote, they ‘devised a scheme for making working people, who had neither borrowed the money nor benefited from it, pay it back’…
