Makin' Friends

FC may have gained a whole host of  admirers after their exploits on the south coast this weekend, but our new friends from Torquay aren’t  the only ones. At last season’s game against King’s Lynn, Course You Can Malcolm played host to superb psychedelic rock band Hey Bulldog, and so impressed with the club were the three piece, it inspired them to write their excellent new single ‘Makin Friends Not Millionaires’. As guitarist and songwriter Rob Manton explains:

“Before we played at Course you can Malcolm last season we watched the documentary on Youtube about FC and really enjoyed and felt a kinship with the FC fans (being a United fan who had his season ticket cancelled for refusing to sign up to the automatic cup scheme). We had a great time when we played at FC and enjoyed the whole day and match atmosphere. In the documentary I saw the banner ‘Makin Friends Not Millionaires’ and that really struck a chord with me as such a beautiful, honest and simple statement against the philosophy of premier league football and politics and  modern life in general, so I used the phrase and it inspired the lyrics in our latest single.”

If you fancy getting your hands on a copy, then have a ganders at their latest press release:

Hey Bulldog

Manchester Psychedelic Blues Rock band Hey Bulldog announce a brand new Free Download Single ‘Makin Friends Not Millionaires’

The ‘Makin Friends Not Millionaires’ single follows the ‘Numb’ EP which was released in 2014 to great reviews and gained national radio exposure with multiple plays by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 music, John Kennedy on XFM and Gary Crowley and Shell Zenner on Amazing Radio.

The new single ‘Makin Friends Not Millionaires’ was initially inspired by the philosophy behind the revolutionary community football club FC United after the band were asked to play a gig there.

Like the ‘Numb’ EP it was recorded at London’s Butcher Row Studios and produced by guitarist and songwriter Rob Manton but this is the first time the band have used outside mixers and marks a sonic step forward with EMI producers Boe Weaver (Archie Bronson Outfit, Pete Molinari, Dolomite Minor, Whyte Horses) offering to take on the mixing duties.

The band began as an idea of main man Rob Manton recording the debut EP, New York City Blues, by himself with the help of a drum machine. Finding a pair of likeminded cohorts Matt Parry (bass) and Ben Howarth-Lees (drums) Manton turned Hey Bulldog into an outstanding live 3 piece band known for their musicianship and live improvisations.

In 2014 the band played a number of medium and smaller sized festivals all over the country and had support slots with Joel Gion (Brian Jonestown Massacre), The Family Rain, J Roddy Walston & The Business, Mazes, Syd Arthur, and Heavy Times.

‘Makin Friends Not Millionaires’ is OUT NOW and available to download direct from the band’s website www.hey-bulldog.com for free.

After what has at times been a difficult season, it serves as a lovely reminder of the uniqueness of our club and the positive effect we’re capable of having. If you want to increase that warm, fuzzy feeling even further, you can listen to BBC DJ and bezzie mate of the Manic Street Preachers,  Steve Lamacq mention FC when he played the song on his BBC 6 Music show a couple of weeks ago.
