Spirit, Patience, Gentleness – 16/8/1819

This afternoon people gathered under the red plaque on the Free Trade Hall marking the area where the Peterloo Massacre took place on this day in 1819.

Actress Maxine Peake read the names of every person killed by the charging cavalry during that peaceful protest.

One spectator suggested though it is commendable the council will mark the 200th anniversary in 2019 with a permanent memorial, there should also be a campaign to rename Piccadilly Station as ‘Peterloo Station’ so that those visiting our city will always remember the sacrifice our people made.

The crowd applauded. A Fine Lung, also celebrating its fifth birthday today, will back all calls for such a gesture.

Spirit, Patience, Gentleness,
All that can adorn and bless
Art thou – let deeds, not words, express
Thine exeeding loveliness.
