FC United’s season starts with an away trip to Worksop Town on Saturday.

Manager Margy has told the club’s website fc-utd.co.uk, that this has been the best pre-season ever…

FC United manager Karl Marginson says he can’t wait to get the season started this Saturday at Worksop Town after hailing the pre-season campaign as the best one the club has ever had.

The Reds have had a mixed bag of results during the last five weeks of friendlies with two victories, two draws and six defeats. But, regardless of the results, Margy has been impressed by the players’ attitudes and performances, especially considering we have taken on five teams from higher up the football pyramid.

He said: “Looking at the performances rather than the results, it’s the best pre-season we’ve ever had. Every single player has staked a claim for a place in the team and it’s given me a real selection headache for Saturday.”

Margy is confident that the team can get off to a good start and be competing at the top of the table straight away. “I’m really excited about what’s coming up this season. We’ve got a good mixture of youth and experience and we’ve added some absolutely quality players to the squad.

“The players are all really focused too. Throughout pre-season there has been no talk about us being unlucky in the play-off final again, the lads have been talking about the new season; they are determined to get off to a flying start and they want to win the league.”

Margy has hailed the importance of the establishment of the Development Squad, which will allow him and his team of coaches the opportunity to help youth team graduates and new recruits stake a claim for a place in the first team, whilst still at the club. This is a luxury that has not been afforded to the coaching staff since 2008 when the reserve team was disbanded.

He explained: “We’ve always done our best to help bring young players through but in recent years that has involved many of them going out ‘on loan’ to other clubs. Now we have the opportunity to really nurture these players whilst they remain part of the set-up. That can only be a good thing.”

As always, Margy is keen to concentrate on his squad and what it can achieve. But, when pushed for other sides to look out for this season in the newly expanded 24 team division, he tipped five clubs.

“Fylde were up there last season and have strengthened, with the crowds that Kings Lynn get they should have a good budget to work with, Buxton have strengthened but have a small squad, which could work for them, whilst Chorley and Witton will be there or thereabouts as well.”

  • JAY says:

Whereas the pre-season primed us for the season I note Stockport County Nil (to give them their full name) still haven’t recovered from playing us.

A County fan rang in to Pure fm on the morning of the 1st game (Home v Boston) to say it was guaranteed that they’d (County) get 3 points & it would be a start to getting out of ‘this tin pot’ league. If that’s the kind of respect they think they need to give then no wonder they’re in the mess they are. That night he didn’t ring back as radio went into meltdown. There’s some big time Charlies in non-league but County or their fans must be the biggest.

After the game at Trafford it looks like we’ll never play County competitively as we pass each other next April/May!

[They’ll soon be out of their tin pot league & out of existence if their team/fans are anything to go by)
