Counterpower

On Wednesday 16 November at 2pm the Working Class Movement Library in Salford will host a book launch by activist and author Tim Gee, fresh from the London and Edinburgh ‘Occupy’ protests.

Counterpower book cover‘Counterpower: Making Change Happen’ traces a genealogy of campaigning tactics, from the Indian campaign for independence from colonial rule, and the movement against apartheid in South Africa, to the revolution in Egypt which has in turn inspired ‘Occupy’ protests in over 950 towns and cities across the world.

The book examines the strengths behind those campaigns that succeeded and the weaknesses of those that lost or have not yet won. It argues that effective political change is not won by asking nicely, but by social movements challenging the rule of political and economic elites with organised, bottom-up, collective people power.

The author began his research at the Working Class Movement Library, described in the book as ‘a monument to the struggles of those who have gone before…A stunning collection of badges, t-shirts, pamphlets, books, leaflets, hand written minutes and radical newspapers’.

The event will be co-hosted by the University of Salford and is free to attend.
