**Football Alert**

Amidst a dedication to looking out for local news stories about divvy blues, bizarre quotes from people linked to the doomed-to-fail green and gold campaign and the odd commentary on popular culture, A Fine Lung feels a duty to include the occasional story about Association Football. So here goes.

FC United of Manchester have amassed 6 whole points from 2 whole games at the start of our sixth season in existence. Last night’s 1-0 win against Nantwich Town followed Sunday’s 2-0 win in Liverpool against Marine, which given the shite end to last season was most uplifting. Aside from the 100% start, for many Reds this was a sweet victory against a club which is widely disliked in non-league football. If you’re not ITK, Nantwich Town used to play in red and were nicknamed “The Wiches” before whoring themselves to a major bingo conglomerate. They’ve since changed their colours to green and have been known as “The Dabbers”, quite rightly attracting claims that they’ve sold their heritage for a couple of quid. Oh no, wait a minute, I’m getting confused with Hyde. We actually like Nantwich, it’s a lovely day out. Hyde can fuck off though.

Jeremy Wright scored United’s winner in the first half last night. A crowd of over 1800 were there to see his run down the left wing and tight-angled shot which bounced in off the post. The Dabbers fans, sandwiched in the Main Stand by FC’s main heads on one side and 100 kids from Newton Heath and New Moston on the other, could only applaud. There were excellent performances from United’s new players, including Ovington, Norton and Battersby and overall we looked very, very assured. Last season’s frailties look to have been overcome. Deegan looks lighter and appears to be working well with the clearly superb Mike Norton. Our centre half pairing look, well, fucking great and when you can rely on subs like Carlos Roca and Nicky Platt you know you’re seeing a side that will compete this season. United are at home again this Saturday against Retford and again on Bank Holiday Monday when we play away at Ashton. You should go.

The 1,000th FC season ticket for 2010-11 has been sold today, which means supporters have raised £109,000 so far towards the target of £125,000 for this season. A great effort from all involved.
